Summary
One of Minalan the Spellmonger's two senior apprentices, born a peasant in Boval Vale and now Viscount of Callierd and a knight magus. The Golden Goblin opens during his first Yule as a married man: his wife Lady Tandine is the daughter of old Lord Kanlan of Anferny, and her people - the Anfernites - are refugees Tyndal is resettling in Callierd after Minalan evacuated their northern homeland ahead of a volcanic eruption that would have killed them all. Lord Kanlan, crippled from an old wound but partly restored by Lilastien's medicine, now lives at Callierd as Tyndal's father-in-law and quiet adviser on rule. He inherits responsibility for Callierd from Minalan as a magelord vassal of "the Count" of the Magelaw, with duties that go beyond ordinary feudal service to include magical service - something he must explain carefully to Tandine. He has spent roughly a decade building first Anferny and then Callierd; his retinue mixes warmagi, knights magi, Wilderlord sergeants, Kasari rangers, and dedicated magi. On the mission itself he is sent with Rondal to investigate a cryptic note left by Lilastien ("KURTZ STATION - ADRIAN - DANGER"), traveling through Vanador - where his old friend Rael the Enchantress, met long ago on the Long March, becomes their supplier - and on into the Goblin Kingdom and the court of Ashakarl. Brave, brash, and quick with a pun; fights with a longsword and keeps the journal whose entries punctuate the book ("From the private journals of Tyndal, Viscount of Callierd").
