Summary
Heir to King Rard and Minalan's political rival in the contest over Farise: both want credit for retaking the rebellious city-state and expelling its pirates. Tyndal has a grudging admiration for Tavard as a knight but does not credit him with statecraft or with his father's wits - and recalls that despite Minalan's tutoring on wisdom, the prince is unlikely to master much of it. His marriage to Armandria of Remere was arranged as a matter of state to bind the duchies under Rard's crown; affection has been thin, and the death of their first son in the dragon attack on Castabriel did not help. The boys quietly suspect Armandria's most recent son was actually fathered by a Kasari ranger during the Princess's captivity at a siege - the dates and the lad's red hair fit - and wonder whether Tavard knows. It was Tavard whose Wilderhall Lady Gatina seized and ransomed back, and Tavard who tried to raise the chivalry in rebellion against the magi while Rondal was improvising to keep the kingdom together.
